Dead of Winter Review 1/6/26

I just finished my first book of the year, and I am so excited to talk about it. I am going to start by being vague and then I will dive into spoilers.

I just finished Dead of Winter by Darcy Coates. This book is about a girl named Christa and how she and a group of strangers’ head into the mountains for a 2 week get away. Everything is going fine till a snowstorm hit, and they are all stranded on the mountain, taking refuge in a cabin that barely fits them all. To make matters worse, one of these people decides to start killing each of the guest, one by one.  Have you read this book before? If so, please share your thoughts and join me in the spoiler section.

This was a reread for me, because I wanted to start the year off with a reread. And it was still just as amazing as the first time. Everything is beautiful written, all the backstories come together so well, and the plot itself was just addicting and great to follow. Even though I already knew what was happening, Darcy’s way of storytelling still played with my mind and had me stressing at each chapter.

This is your warning you are entering a spoiler zone.

Knowing that Kiernan is the murder, there was a lot of things that did foreshadow that knowledge that I remember not catching the first time I read the book, but I did definitely catch them the second time.

I am also a little sad that we don’t get to find out the faiths of Alexis and Hatch. Did they survive? Did Kiernan end up finishing them off while Denny chased Christa away? Let me know your thoughts on that one.

I also kind of wish that Darcy would have done an epilogue at the end, maybe something like a month later. Or have it been something like in a court room, Christa having to tell the story to the jury and everyone listening. It would have been cool if it ended that way, and it was her reciting the course of events. Then we would have also been told if the other 2 lived or not.

Obviously, these are all my opinions, but I think a cool spin off book would be of everyone’s points of view. To see what they were thinking moments before death. Or seeing themselves put together the pieces. How Simone came to the conclusion that Steve was the murder, her thoughts when she realized that she was wrong and dead. Getting Denny’s point of view as he believes Christa to have been the murder, and what his final thought would have been when he found out it wasn’t her. Or even Hatch’s point of view as Denny chases Christa away and he can’t follow them to help, to tell them who it really was. All of these would be such unique point of views that I know I would have enjoyed reading about. What do you think? What are your thoughts?
